Introduction
The Kanban System Design (KSD) course teaches the fundamentals of the Kanban method and is an essential step in learning how to design effective work systems that drive continuous improvement and promote organizational agility.
In a 16-hour training format (two full days or four 4-hour sessions), participants will learn key concepts such as flow, pull systems, and collaborative improvement. Participants will learn how to implement Kanban by understanding how work is currently organized and managed, identifying areas of dissatisfaction and transforming them into opportunities for improvement.
Through simulations and practical exercises, they will experience how a Kanban system works and learn how to apply the Systems Thinking Approach to Introduce Kanban (STATIK), with the aim of designing boards and systems tailored to their needs, allowing them to improve work visualization, manage workloads more evenly and increase delivery capability and predictability.
This course provides professionals with tools to increase speed and responsiveness, improve visibility, communication, and collaboration within teams, and to strengthen governance and risk management with a customer-centric approach aimed at achieving sustainable results.
Objectives
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
- Understand and explain the fundamentals of the Kanban method, its principles, practices, motivations, and benefits.
- Design Kanban boards tailored to different types of services, visualizing workflows and associated risks while reflecting operational reality.
- Understand pull systems and how they help improve flow and reduce overload.
- Build single-service Kanban systems using the Systems Thinking Approach to Introduce Kanban (STATIK).
- Understand service classes and their impact on managing expectations, priorities, and outcomes.
- Manage commitment points and facilitate Kanban sessions that allow the team to organize themselves around work, fostering collaboration and decision-making.
- Use key metrics such as Lead Time, Cumulative Flow Diagrams, and Run Charts to drive continuous improvement.
Participant Profile
The course is aimed at any professional, team, manager, or leader from any company or sector who wants to understand and apply the fundamentals of the Kanban method in their daily work. It is also aimed at those looking to start a Kanban initiative or who are already involved in designing and managing a Kanban system and want to discover more opportunities and get the most out of it.
It is recommended to have previously taken the Team Kanban Practitioner (TKP) course to have a solid foundation in the principles and practices of the Kanban Method and thus get the most out of the KSD content.
Prerequisites
It is recommended that participants have experience in service delivery, a good understanding of Kanban, and have read the book “Discovering Kanban: The Evolutionary Path to Business Agility” by David J. Anderson
Course Materials
All participants will receive one month of free access to the Better With Kanban+ (BWK+) platform, where they can access online the book “Discovering Kanban: The Evolutionary Path to Business Agility” by David J. Anderson (the updated edition of the well-known “Blue Book”). In addition, they will have access to exclusive Kanban method content, including case studies, articles, posters, and videos that will enrich their learning and facilitate the practical application of what they have learned in the course.
Methodology
The course is delivered in face-to-face or online format, with an active and participative approach. Participants will incorporate the knowledge through real-world application exercises, working on specific situations facilitated and guided by the trainer at all moments. This approach ensures the understanding, assimilation, and practical application of the main concepts and tools of the Kanban method from day one.
Certifications
All participants will receive a certificate of completion for the Kanban System Improvement course from Kanban University. Participants who complete this course and the Kanban Systems Design (KSD) course will receive the Kanban Management Professional (KMP) credential.
In addition, this course grants 16 PDU “Ways of Working” hours from the Project Management Institute (PMI), contributing to participants’ continual professional development.
Accreditation
A Certificate of Attendance for the KSD 200 course will be issued only to participants with an attendance above 75%, and a Diploma of Achievement will also be awarded if they pass the assessment test.
