ISTQB Advanced Test Manager

Introduction

This 5-day course will enable you to obtain the ISTQB Advanced Test Manager certification.

The course focuses on testing topics, such as test processes, risk management, test planning and control, reporting, resources, communication, team development, test process improvement, defect classification and tool support.

Students will receive exercises and practice exams to achieve the ISTQB Advanced Test Manager certification.

Objectives

At the end of the course, the advanced Test Manager will be able to:

  • Implement the test mission, objectives and processes established by the organization.
  • Organize and direct risk management activities and use risks to drive test planning and reporting.
  • Create and implement test plans consistent with organizational policies and test strategies.
  • Continuously monitor and control test activities to achieve project objectives.
  • Evaluate and report test status.
  • Identify skill and resource gaps in your test team and participate in obtaining adequate resources.
  • Identify and plan test team skills development.
  • Propose a business case for testing activities that outlines the expected costs and benefits.
  • Ensure proper communication within the test team and with other project stakeholders.
  • Actively lead test process improvement initiatives.
  • Design and implement a defect classification scheme.
  • Apply tools to support testing.

Student Profile

To obtain the ISTQB Advanced Test Manager certificate, the student must have an ISTQB Foundation certificate first.

Prerequisites

This course is recommended for testers, test analysts, test engineers, test consultants, test administrators and anyone wishing to obtain an ISTQB Senior Test Manager certificate.

The advanced certificates are also suitable for anyone wishing to have a deeper understanding of software testing, such as project managers, quality managers, software development managers, business analysts, IT directors and management consultants.

Accreditation

A Certificate of Attendance will be issued only to students with an attendance of more than 75% and a Diploma of Achievement if they also pass the evaluation test.

ISTQB Advanced Test Manager

1. Software Testing Process

The activities of the Software Test Manager within the testing process are covered with emphasis on the tasks of test planning, monitoring and control. It describes how to implement a project retrospective to validate processes and discover areas for improvement.

2. Software Test Management

This session explains how to define software test management tasks according to the context of a project and how to match testing activities to the software lifecycle in use.

Risk-based testing for test prioritization and effort allocation is discussed with emphasis on product and project risk management. Students learn how to consider stakeholder opinions when assessing risk levels and define risk mitigation activities. Risk control activities and risk reporting are also covered.

It evaluates different types of test documents and discusses how to adapt them to meet the needs of the project and the organization. Relevant standards are also considered.

Metric and experience-based methods for estimating testing effort are covered, and participants learn how to communicate the value of testing. Distributed, outsourced and in-house forms of test organization are described.

3. Reviews

The focus of this session is on defining an appropriate software review plan and configuring the review to achieve the best results. Students learn how to use metrics to optimize review results and show return on investment. This session also explains how to lead a review team through a formal review.

4. Defect Management

This session describes how to set up a defect lifecycle tailored to the software lifecycle in use and explains how to analyze defect reports to assess the capability of software development and test processes.

5. Improving the Software Test Process

This session explains the generic steps to perform a standard test process improvement initiative and create a test improvement plan. It includes the TMMi, TPI Next, CTP and STEP software test process improvement models.

6. Software Test Tools and Automation

This penultimate session covers how to plan and implement different tools (including open source and custom-built tools) considering risks, costs, benefits and opportunities. The use of tools for metrics collection and evaluation is described.

7. People Skills – Team Composition

The last session of the course discusses how to assess the range of skills needed for a software testing team and how to define a growth plan for skills development. It includes team motivation and communication skills.
