The Product Owner is responsible for maximizing the value of the product or services being developed. The Product Owner is the sole person responsible for managing the product backlog by clearly expressing work items and prioritizing them to best achieve the goals and mission. The Product Owner is one person, not a committee. As the project’s key stakeholder, they insulate the team from other business stakeholders by acting as a shield and funneling the business and user needs through the team backlog.
The Product Owner role requires working closely with key stakeholders inside and outside of the organization. Communication is a large part of the product owner responsibilities. He or she needs a solid understanding of the users, marketplace, competition, and of future trends for the domain, the industry, or the type of system being developed.
Product Owner responsibilities include working with the team daily to provide guidance from the business, working with Product Management to champion the vision and objectives for the product, making tough decisions, defining and helping break down user stories, prioritizing the backlog and manages changes, answering questions, defining acceptance criteria, and accepting or rejecting deliverables.
