What is Kanban Method?

Initially implemented as a manufacturing method by Toyota in the 1960s, the application of Kanban has recently seen a dramatic rise since the publication of the book “Kanban: Successful Evolutionary Change for Your Technology Business” by David Anderson in 2010. Anderson’s Kanban Method is based on his experience in the application of Kanban at Microsoft.

Kanban is a work flow management system that can be utilized at all levels of an organization, from team-level work, strategy, and direction through to enterprise levels of decision making. It improves efficiency and impact by helping design, manage, and evolve services and products.

The Kanban Method is based on the 6 practices of visualizing, limiting WIP, managing flow, making policies explicit, providing feedback loops and always improving and evolving. Its principles are classified into two groups: 

  1. Change Management Principles: how to approach change management when introducing Kanban in the organization
  2. Service Delivery Principles: applicable to the entire organization, understanding it as an ecosystem of interdependent services

Why is it important?

Although the Kanban Method goes far beyond a simple board with columns and Post-It notes, it is common to see a wall-sized Kanban board in many agile organizations. The method’s values, principles, practices, and highly-visual elements allow for an ideal approach to initiate an agile transformation. Kanban also provides a set of roles, metrics, and steps that are based on a systems thinking approach. It can easily be applied in combination with other methods such as Scrum, XP, and Lean to provide greater freedom of adaptation in organizations.

Its simplicity contributes to its ability to expand beyond the design and development of software or hardware products and into professional services, creative initiatives, or management of a service center. The ability to utilize Kanban and/or its elements can streamline almost any type of work.
