The world continues to change and it is up to every one of us to keep adapting to it. But, in recent years, nothing has undergone a more rapid transformation, as Satya Nadella (CEO of Microsoft) points out, than the way we work.

Before the pandemic, in 2019, and it seems like a lifetime ago, we knew how to work effectively from the office. In fact, 90% of us did (according to Mckinsey’s report, “What executives are saying about the future of hybrid work”).

During the pandemic, we learned to work remotely, as well as to do it effectively or productively (according to some reports, such as Microsoft’s “Building resilience & maintaining innovation in a hybrid world”).

As from 2022, in general, the majority of companies will have started the "return to the office". However, nothing will ever be the same again.

Many companies have embraced what we understand as hybrid work models, which basically aim to capture the best of both worlds. The ability to focus and be productive, along with the autonomy of remote work, but also the ability to cultivate a sense of belonging and shape the company culture that comes with working together face-to-face. The balance of these two approaches of working through flexible presence policies and the rapid development of technology makes it theoretically possible to achieve these benefits.

However, we are still learning how to make the most of this new way of working. As we want to represent on this Transformation Sketch, in this humble tribute to the great Francisco Ibáñez, who passed away in July 2023, companies should reflect on what is the right balance for each specific context between remote and face-to-face work. It is not just a matter of establishing a quota of office days per week, but of ensuring that both the time in the office and the time at home are as productive as possible for the individual and for the company.

And this requires a complete redefinition of what we understand by productivity in the workplace. As Satya Nadella again points out, “We need to define productivity much more broadly, including collaboration, learning and wellness to drive the career advancement of every worker.”
